Bugs 3D Studio Max Tutorial

 By Arxwn

Have you ever wondered how they make those gigantic swarms of bugs in movies.
Well I have and I wanted to make something that looked "kinda" like that.
Of course I didn't not get into the trouble to built the dynamics of a swarm of bugs.
In this tutorials I'll show you how to make small ant-like bugs run on a surface in a random manner

The first thing we have to do is built and animate a simple bug.
Remember that we are trying to keep down the poly count because there will be hundreds of this little buggers in our scene

I begin with the body of the bug.
Just three geospheres merged together.
I used the Boolean tool to get rid of the polys that didn't show.

The next step is to add small legs to your bug. Put small geospheres for joints and cones for legs.

After that we have to animate our little legs.
We don't want to use bones so we will just change the pivot point of the legs group some parts.
Now attach the tip of the leg to the main part of the leg and the main part of the leg to the main body of the bug.

Next we animate the legs without moving the actual bug.
Select the main leg part , push animate and rotate it a bit.
Now slide the animate bar a couple of frames and rotate the leg to their original place.

A lot of hard work is behind everything you see in this site. So if you like it you can help us to keep
the site as free and open to the public as possible by making a donation (of any amount)

Enter the curve editor select your animated leg.
Select the rotation axis and press the Parameter Curve Out-of Range Types.
Select cycle. Do this with all legs.

Texture your bug as you please and group it all up.
Change it's pivot to the height of the tip of the legs.

Now create a geosphere.
This will be our surface which bugs will run on.
Create a wind force and give it the following values.
Place near the sphere This will give the random movement to our bugs.

Next create a particle flow.
It will be really simple since our bugs will just run randomly on our geosphere.
Give it the following values.

Press play and watch the little buggers run. Just a tip. This is an absolute system hog with more than 1000 bugs.
